Owner hours include building, marketing, sales, delivery, support and admin. Include all of them when comparing a plan.
COMPARE THE INPUTS
Same business. Different volume.
Price, cost rates and fixed costs stay the same. Owner hours may change with volume.
What the calculation includes
Sales charged = purchases × price. Refund and payment fee allowances both use sales charged. Other costs = purchases × cost per purchase. Fixed costs and advertising are deducted once. Surplus is what remains before owner pay and tax. Surplus per hour = surplus ÷ all owner hours.
Break even volume = fixed costs plus advertising divided by contribution per purchase, rounded up to a whole purchase. Contribution per purchase = price less its refund allowance, payment fee allowance and other per purchase costs. If contribution is zero or negative, increasing volume cannot cover positive fixed costs at those inputs.
This one month example excludes sales tax, debt payments, equipment purchases and timing differences between payment and delivery. It assumes all purchased work is delivered in the month. Fee rates and refund percentages are editable illustrative assumptions.
A useful plan makes its assumptions visible. AI helps build the model. You still need to check the math, demand and workload.
